SUISA is once again pleased to report a record result for the past financial year: higher revenues, lower administrative costs and increased distributable income for musicians underscore this successful performance. Higher revenues from background music, concerts and other performances as well as from blank media levies contributed to this very good result.
Zurich, 10 June 2026 – SUISA, the cooperative society for composers, lyricists and publishers of music in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, once again managed to increase its results in the 2025 financial year. The SUISA Group received CHF 215.6 million in royalties from copyrights last year – 2.7% more than in the previous year (CHF 209.9 million). Together with secondary operating income, securities income and other non-operating income (total of CHF 22.7 million), the SUISA Group’s total turnover amounted to CHF 238.3 million, 2.1% higher than in the previous year (CHF 233.3 million).
CHF 161.2 million came from its core domestic business: copyright licensing for use in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. SUISA generated higher revenues, particularly from performance rights: at CHF 64.5 million, this was 6.8% higher than in 2024 (CHF 60.4 million). This 6.8% increase is mainly attributable to the use of background music in offices, restaurants and shops as well as at concerts.
Performance rights overtake broadcasting rights
The latter shows that an ever-growing audience in Switzerland attends music events and concerts in particular. Thanks to this growth, revenues from performance rights have for the first time overtaken those from broadcasting rights. At CHF 60.8 million, these were slightly higher than in the previous year (CHF 60.7 million). SUISA also generated higher revenues from blank media levies, which, at CHF 16.4 million, were 10.6% higher in 2025 than in the previous year (CHF 14.8 million).
Online rights: higher revenues in Switzerland – decline in global business
In terms of online rights, last year’s revenues show a mixed picture: while online revenues in Switzerland and Liechtenstein increased by 20.5% to CHF 15.8 million, globally managed rights for the online use of music declined by 7.6% to CHF 41.6 million. In terms of mechanical rights, SUISA was able to increase its revenues by 10.5% to CHF 3.7 million. Nevertheless, the long-term decline in physical media continues. Last year, revenues from the use of SUISA’s repertoire abroad underwent a positive development: at CHF 12.8 million, these were 2.1% higher than in the previous year (CHF 12.5 million).
Lower costs and more money for music authors and publishers
Lower costs also contributed to the outstanding results. Despite the increasing volume of work, SUISA was able to reduce total expenditure to CHF 39.7 million (-7.2% compared to the previous year) thanks to ongoing cost discipline and the positive effects of active management of outstanding accounts receivable. Authors and publishers of music in Switzerland and abroad are the main beneficiaries of higher revenues and lower costs: from the annual result for 2025, the SUISA Group will be able to distribute CHF 191.7 million to musicians (+2.4% compared to the previous year).
Challenges in 2026: artificial intelligence and SRG licence
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the main challenges this year. AI-generated music raises urgent questions: protected works are used to train models, while new content is created that competes with human-made music. SUISA is committed to ensuring that the interests of authors, publishers and other rights holders are taken into account in the forthcoming regulation and that cultural workers are fairly remunerated. SUISA will also campaign for culture and Swiss music in particular to retain a prominent place in the renewed SRG licence.
