The 2021 SNSF Scientific Image Competition is underway

Share the beauty of your research! The Swiss National Science Foundation invites researchers to submit their photographs, images and videos to the SNSF Scientific Image Competition. This year, in addition to the official jury, the public will be able to choose their favourite works from among those submitted since 2017.

The fifth edition of the SNSF Scientific Image Competition is now open. Once again this year, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) invites researchers throughout Switzerland to submit their photographs, images and videos to share their vision of their working environment, their discoveries and their colleagues. The winning projects and a selection of the entries will be exhibited at the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography from 7 to 30 May 2021.

The competition jury will award a first prize in the amount of CHF 1000 and distinctions in the amount of CHF 250 in each of the competition's four categories:

   - object of study;
   - women and men of science;
   - locations and instruments;
   - video loop (max. 15 seconds).

The jury will be chaired by Nadine Wietlisbach, director of Fotomuseum Winterthur. Other members of the jury include Lars Lindemann, director of photography at Geo magazine; Jens Hauser, a curator specialising in hybrid arts; Irène Hediger, director of Artists-in-Labs; and Emmanuel Ferrand, a mathematician and arts/science activist.

Public vote in March 2021

For the fifth edition of the competition, the SNSF is inviting the public to vote online in March 2021 for their favourite image and video among the works submitted to the competition.

The competition is open to all scientists working at a research institution in Switzerland and for work produced after 1 January 2020. Professional photographers and videographers may not take part in the competition. The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2021. All submissions - roughly 1600 to date - can be viewed in an online gallery.
