Area bigger than 332 football fields reforested to enhance sustainable mobility

Juice Technology shifts its ongoing reforestation initiative to Spain, offsetting the carbon footprint of its products

Juice Technology AG, a major producer of electric charging stations and related software and the leading manufacturer of portable charging stations for electric vehicles, has long ensured that as many trees are planted as needed to neutralise the CO2 emissions from fabricating and transporting its products. The Swiss-based charging station maker has recently turned to supporting a reforestation project in Spain.

Just one single tree is enough to compensate for the carbon footprint generated by manufacturing and transporting one JUICE CHARGER me. Ten years after being planted, one tree can absorb a whopping 120 kg of CO2, thereby offsetting the entire carbon2 footprint of a JUICE BOOSTER 2 or JUICE Phaser in no time at all. Juice even plants up to twelve trees for each of its largest charging stations, contributing to more climate-friendly mobility.

Reforestation with broad-scale impacts

Juice began helping eighteen months ago in the Canadian province of British Columbia with the rehabilitation of forest areas decimated in 2017 by a cataclysmic forest fire. Having completed its work for this project, the company is now focusing its commitment to similar efforts under way in Europe.

In Spain, where Juice has been represented for a year now by its national subsidiary, there is urgent need for reforestation in a region where biodiversity is threatened by large monoculture pine and eucalyptus plantations. In Spain, Juice is supporting endeavours by the Lurgaia Foundation as part of the One Tree Planted charity’s mission to create a contiguous forested area of native trees.

These reforestation efforts in Spain’s Biscay province aim to restore the forests of Undabaso, which form part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. More than 35 different species of trees are being planted. Trees not planted in monocultures, rather in settings devoted to promoting biological diversity, can easily live to be 50 or 100 years old. They continuously absorb and sequester carbon over their entire lifetime. Trees contribute to purifying air and water, produce oxygen, prevent erosion and deliver CO2-neutral raw materials. Moreover, reforestation projects also create jobs.

Commitment above and beyond the company’s own business sector

Electric mobility is closely linked with sustainability, and the same holds true for charging infrastructure. Quality is the simplest means of making a charging station sustainable. A rugged design comprised of high-quality components ensures that a charging station is resistant to physical damage. Another means of ensuring long service life is a fundamental focus on software accompanied by continuous software updates.

Christoph Erni, founder and CEO of Juice Technology AG, affirms the dedicated commitment of Juice: “What’s more, we offset the embodied ‘grey’ energy of our products with reforestation projects. The equivalent of more than 332 football fields of forest have already been planted on our behalf, financed by us, and our replanting efforts continue non-stop. The mobility transition cannot succeed without widespread, broadly embraced electric mobility. Ensuring such mobility is environmentally sustainable will take efforts right from the start to minimise its ecological footprint as much as possible – which is why charging stations from Juice are durably designed for long service life,” Erni adds.

Juice customers receive a personalised tree certificate showing details of the offset quantity of CO2 and the coordinates of the reforestation project area.
