swissuniversities and Springer Nature sign a new Open Access agreement

swissuniversities has adopted a new transformative Open Access agreement with Springer Nature. This agreement provides Swiss researchers with access to SpringerLink with over 2'000 Hybrid journals and enables authors affiliated with the Swiss academic and research institutions to publish their accepted research papers Open Access, making this primary research immediately and freely accessible from the point of publication.

"The agreement with Springer Nature is an important step towards achieving the goal of Open Access. It guarantees researchers and students optimal access to publications during the transitional period.", said Yves Flückiger, President of swissuniversities and head of the negotiation team.

This agreement is effective from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022 and follows the Memorandum of Understanding, signed by both parties in March 2020. As of 1 July 2020, the Swiss Agreement entitles corresponding authors affiliated with member institutions of swissuniversities and additional Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries customers to publish 100% of their accepted research papers immediately Open Access in Springer Nature's over 2000 Hybrid journals. Furthermore, the Swiss Agreement provides full reading and continuing access to Springer Nature's journal portfolio (incl. Springer, Palgrave, Adis, and Nature Academic Journals) for all researchers and students affiliated with the participating institutions.

This agreement represents a significant step towards achieving the goal of 100% Open Access published articles by 2024 in Switzerland - a goal aimed by the national Open Access strategy of swissuniversities. After contract signing with Elsevier in May 2020, this agreement is the second national contract with a major publisher, supporting all academic and research institutions across Switzerland as they transition to Open Access.
