Darmstadt, 2 September 2002: Wella has been informed that a tax
assessment for the payment of additional excise IPI taxes
("industrial production taxes")for the years 1997 through 2001 in the
amount of BRL 725 Million has been issued vis-a- vis Belfam Industria
Cosmetica SA, a company which mainly produces haircare products for
the Brazilian market for the Wella group. The merits of such tax
assessment are challenged by Belfam. Any payments under the tax
assessment would become due only upon finalization of the several
years lasting tax appeal proceedings planned by Belfam.Presently, it is unclear which consequences this might have for the Wella group.
