Gemplus Launches .sim to Extend Mobile Services to the Internet

Luxemburg and 3gsm World Congress, Barcelona (ots/PRNewswire)

- .sim is the Bridge Between the Telecom and PC/Internet Worlds in
the New Converging Digital Arena
Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 - GEM and
NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card solutions,
today announces the launch of .sim (DOTSIM), a software and SIM
platform that allows operators to offer a full range of multimedia
and telecommunications services beyond the mobile world.
.sim extends the SIM's traditional roles of authentication and
security from mobile networks and enables operators to offer
multimedia services through various channels: Mobile, web and fixed
line TV, all of which can be charged through the subscriber's phone
bill. Building on Gemplus' considerable experience in cards, software
and services, .sim allows users to synchronize contacts, share
multimedia content between devices and access new services from their
mobile operator, whether from their PC or mobile phone.
"The convergence between mobile and Internet is changing the
rules. To keep up, mobile operators must extend their services beyond
mobile and encompass those of the PC/Internet, while maintaining
interoperability of use," explains Christophe Dolique, Vice
President, Wireless Strategy and Marketing, Gemplus. ".sim helps
mobile operators establish their brand across all communication and
multimedia channels and places them at the centre of digital
convergence."
.sim supports converged services through different channels and
devices. For consumers, .sim means simple, easy to use access and the
secure management of contacts, content and payment, whatever the
device. For operators, it means control over their brand, services
and user experience in both the mobile and Internet worlds.
Converging contacts
.sim provides a convenient way for end-users to manage and
synchronize their contacts via their PC. It repositions the phone
number as the ubiquitous identifier whatever the communication
channel. Users can transfer their multimedia contacts from device to
device and the phonebook is fully adapted to the converging worlds of
Mobile and Internet, including VoIP number, IM nickname, Blog URL,
etc.
Converging content
.sim makes it easy for users to manage multimedia content using
advanced handset browsers. It also automates the installation of
media-players or Instant messaging clients onto handsets and allows
the sharing of content between devices with dual download for digital
rights. The platform makes it simple for operators to target new
services and applications for different market segments.
Converging branding
.sim gives mobile operators the freedom to reinforce their brand
across multiple devices. They can update the User Interface 'over the
air' to suit the varying needs of different market segments or in
response to user behavior. They can even offer an 'Off-line' portal,
pre-loaded into the card.

Gemplus booth, B08-B09, Hall 8, at the 3GSM World Congress, 13-16
February, Barcelona.
