4th European Conference "Tobacco or Health" 2007; Invitation to the Media Conference, 11th October, 2007, Congress Center, Basel

Basel (ots)

The 4th European Conference "Tobacco or Health"
takes place in Basel from 11th-13th October, 2007. The conference is
organized by the Swiss Cancer League together with the German Cancer
Society on behalf of the Association of European Cancer Leagues.
About 800 participants from over 60 countries will discuss a
smoke-free Europe.
Tobacco or health: This is not a question, but a conclusion.
Every year over 5 million people in the world die due to the effects
of active or passive tobacco consumption, including 650,000 people in
the European Union.
As a result, the 4th European Conference "Tobacco or Health" 2007
(ECToH 07) is clearly aiming for a smoke-free Europe. All public
indoor places are to become smoke-free in the countries of Europe.
About 800 experts in the fields of health, education, science,
politics, sports, and culture will discuss how to achieve this goal
from 11th-13th October, 2007 at the Congress Center Basel.
The ECToH 07 will tackle current issues and facilitate an
exchange of information between the different countries: What are the
tried and tested strategies and methods to prevent young people from
smoking, to help smokers quit, and to protect the population from
passive smoking?
A wide range of topics will be discussed and dealt with at the
conference, including: Implementation of the WHO Framework Convention
on Tobacco Control to passive Smoking; product regulation; the
influence of the tobacco industry on tobacco consumption by women,
and prevention programs for schools.
A highlight of the conference is the round table on the theme of
passive smoking, to which health ministers and national health
officials from all of Europe are invited. The latest study in the
area of tobacco control and prevention is awaited with great
anticipation. Luk Joossens, a tobacco control expert from Belgium,
studied the tobacco control policies of 30 European countries in 2007
and will now present the results of the study exclusively at the
ECToH 07.
The ECToH 07 is the largest conference on the subject of tobacco
control and prevention in Europe. It is under the patronage of Markos
Kyprianou, European Union Commissioner for Health, as well as Pascal
Couchepin, Switzerland's health minister.
