Promotion of State-of-the-Art Laser Technology with International Innovation Prize

Ditzingen, Germany (ots)

The private foundation Berthold
Leibinger Stiftung holds its Innovation Prize competition for applied
laser technology once again. The topics in 2002 will be laser
medicine and production technology.
The invention of the laser 40 years ago initiated a development
that has produced remarkable results in every sphere of daily life:
today compact data storage media such as CDs and DVDs, eyesight
correction and restoration as well as careful patient treatment in
medical technology and manufacturing of such "drivers of modern
society" as microprocessors and vehicles would be unthinkable without
the laser. One of today's most important key technologies, the once
in public largely ignored laser has left the physicists' laboratories
and is now an integral part of almost all sectors of technology and
modern life.
The Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis recognizes this
fascinating technology and promotes it. From the year 2000 onward,
the prize is awarded on a two-yearly basis to scientists and
developers for outstanding and innovative research work in applied
laser physics.
The prestigious jury is made up of experts and leading
personalities both in industry and science from the USA, Japan and
Germany. It includes the inventor of the laser, Nobel Laureate
Charles H. Townes. The jury selects three prizewinners after personal
presentations of the work nominated. The prizes will be distributed
in October 2002 at the special prizegiving ceremony. The prize money
amounts to 35,000 Euros.
The competition is open to individuals as much as to project
groups. Work submitted can take the form of dissertations,
habilitations, patent specifications or other recognized scientific
publications in any language. The closing date for applications is
March 31, 2002.
The non-profit, private Berthold Leibinger Stiftung was founded in
1992 by the Managing Partner and President of the TRUMPF GmbH + Co.
KG in Germany, Prof. Dr.-Ing. E.H. Berthold Leibinger. Its objectives
include the furtherment of science and research, and it is also
highly committed in the social and cultural spheres.
