A Strong Voice of the Present: Sandra Mujinga Joins the Collection of Kunstmuseum St.Gallen

The Kunstmuseum St.Gallen is delighted to announce its acquisition of the major installation Skin to Skin (2025) by Norwegian artist Sandra Mujinga, who lives and works in Oslo. The work was acquired through The Approach in London. This significant addition to the collection was made possible through the generous support of SENN Resources, St.Gallen.

Skin to Skin is an outstanding work of contemporary art that sharpens the international orientation of the collection while further refining its focus on socially relevant, multi-voiced art histories. With this acquisition, the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen continues its new collection strategy of critically reflecting on its holdings through targeted historical and contemporary additions, while further expanding established (art) historical narratives.

Skin to Skin consists of ten figures, one placed upon a mirrored pedestal, a mirrored tower, and a soundtrack. A powerful, shifting green light fills the space, giving the scene an intense atmosphere. Sculpture, sound, reflection, and light merge to create an immersive experience.

Inspired by science fiction and Afrofuturism, the artist explores strategies of camouflage, transformation, and disappearance. In doing so, she addresses conditions of visibility, control, and self-representation. The work points to the fleeting nature of presence as well as to the mechanisms through which bodies—especially the Black body—are simultaneously exposed and withdrawn. Skin to Skin thus opens up a compelling, speculative space between protection and threat, presence and opacity.

According to Director Gianni Jetzer, this acquisition strengthens the profile of the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen as an institution that sustainably inscribes current social questions into its collection through the inclusion of key contemporary works—and he extends his thanks to SENN Resources, St.Gallen for their pioneering support of this acquisition.

The presentation of Skin to Skin at the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen is planned for the first half of 2027.
