The Almex division of the German IT and engineering Group Hoeft & Wessel will supply 500 stationary ticket vending machines to S-Bahn Berlin GmbH. With their extra bright screens that respond to the lightest touch, a faster ticket printer, a quadrilateral menu for easy selection of standard tickets, a display highlighting the next step in the procedure, Braille labelling and a bag rest, this latest generation of machines is even more convenient and easier to use for passengers. The result is a significant reduction in the time required to operate the machines for the passengers. Moreover, S-Bahn Berlin will install additional ticket machines in stations with a high passenger volume, so that the total number of machines will increase by 50.
S-Bahn Berlin opted for an Almex ticketing system on the strength of the positive experiences with a previous-generation Almex system that was also supplied by Hoeft & Wessel. 400 new ticket machines will be installed in the course of this year, starting in May 2010. The remaining 100 units will follow in 2011.
Some 1.3 million passengers travel on the S-Bahn network in Berlin and the surrounding area. Time-based tickets can be purchased as well as single-fare tickets, and they can be paid for using cash or cards.
"The new ticket vending machines represent an investment to make our services even more user-friendly. Our passengers will appreciate the easier and faster operation of these terminals," explains Gerd-Peter Willbrandt, Head of Sales at S-Bahn Berlin.
A key focus in the development of the new machines was on providing universal access to all users. With their bright screen, Braille labelling and the clear guidance provided to the user, these machines are particularly convenient for use by passengers with disabilities. The units can also provide information acoustically.
