JUICE CELSIUS: Juice expands active temperature monitoring at household socket-outlets

Juice Technology has taken the temperature sensors it builds into its Schuko plugs and integrated them into its household plug adapters for Switzerland, Italy and the UK

Juice Technology AG, producer of electric charging stations and software and the market leader in portable chargers for electric vehicles, is now also integrating its patented JUICE CELSIUS temperature sensor into its household plug adapters for Switzerland, Italy and the United Kingdom to ensure safe, reliable and care-free charging.

E-vehicles are always recharged where they’re parked for longer periods of time, usually in the workplace or at home – and sometimes, too, from a standard wall socket if no higher power outlet is available. Yet, household socket-outlets are not designed to deliver the high continuous-current loads for e-car charging. This lower capacity is exacerbated by the fact that older buildings in particular are not always ideally wired, or their electrical installations may be defective – which is why charging can quickly overheat the socket and, in a worst case scenario, cause a fire. Even socket-outlets that are merely contaminated over the years from dust ingress can dangerously overheat and cause a fire.

Juice Technology AG is addressing this problem by taking the JUICE CELSIUS temperature sensor technology it already builds into its Schuko plugs and integrating these sensors into its household plugs for use in Switzerland (T12/T13), Italy (Type L) and the UK (Type G). This patented solution ensures absolutely safe and reliable charging operations even from normal household socket-outlets. These entirely redeveloped household adapters have all been tested and certified to the standards of Germany's VDE Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies. The right-angled cable-entry design prevents power-socket housings from wearing out and becoming loose due to tensile and pressure forces.

Simple communication via the JUICE CONNECTOR

The integrated temperature sensor communicates with the JUICE BOOSTER 2 charging station via the JUICE CONNECTOR plug connection. If the plug detects any potential overheating, it immediately transmits a signal to the mobile charging station which, in turn, is able to shut down the charging process in a controlled manner. This prevents any potential damage to the power socket or the electric car’s battery.

Once the temperature of the overheated pins has dropped to a normal level, the charging operation re-starts. Three re-starts, in part at stepwise lowered charging power, ensure that your car is recharged by morning despite any hiccups. If on the third attempt the plug again overheats, the charging cycle is aborted entirely to ensure the safety of users.

From now on, the JUICE CELSIUS temperature sensor is integrated into all Schuko, T12/T13, Type-G and Type-L adapters of the JUICE BOOSTER 2 – at no additional cost to the consumer: the set prices remain the same.

Causes and prevention of cable fires

  1. Cause: Cable fires can be caused by overloaded power lines, defectively wired electric power systems, or conducting too much current through low-capacity cables. Another cause is when an excessively high number of electronic devices are plugged into a multi-socket power strip.
  2. Foreseeability: In most cases, smouldering cables and cable fires occur inside walls, and therefore remain undetected until very late. Yet, various signs may indicate conditions conducive to cable fires: crackling noises or sparking when turning electrical devices or light switches on or off, repeated tripping of fuses, unexplainable loose contacts, flickering lights, or image interference (break-up) on the television screen.
  3. Prevention: Essential electrical devices should be acquired exclusively from reputable specialist dealers such as the retailers of Juice Technology Cheaply made devices and power sockets become faulty or fail much more frequently under electrical overloading than equipment manufactured to high standards. Plugs serving unused devices should always be removed from the socket.

About Juice Technology

Juice Technology AG, headquartered in the town of Cham in the Swiss canton of Zug, is a globally active producer of charging solutions for electric vehicles. The company’s comprehensive product portfolio, featuring AC and DC charging stations ranging from lightweight mobile devices to large fast chargers, makes it one of the very few full-range vendors in the industry. Juice has dominated the market for mobile 22-kW charging stations since 2014.

The consistent, end-to-end software orientation decisively distinguishes Juice from other solutions available on the market. All Juice devices displaying the “J+” marking are based on the same processor and firmware, making them all mutually compatible with one another. By utilising uniform, consistent software architecture, Juice saves an immense amount of time, effort and cost. Solutions such as omni-dynamic load management, payment by credit card and the open-interface backend are thus all available to the entire product range.

The Juice Group enjoys worldwide presence with its own locations, subsidiaries and partner companies, Juice Services AG and the German firm Juice Europe GmbH headquartered in Munich both form part of the corporate Group. It also has a global network of retailers at its disposal. It currently employs over 160 people in house across the research and development, production, marketing, administration, purchasing, sales and logistics teams.
