The Gotthard Motorway Service Area is opening its new building on the southbound carriageway at the start of May. A construction period of nine months has led to an impressive building in architectural terms which elegantly and naturally fits into the mountain landscape, authentically embodying the values of the canton of Uri. The new motorway service area is not only compelling in terms of its modern architecture: it also offers its guests outstanding sanitary facilities and a spacious outside area guaranteeing relaxation.

The new building consists of high, light-flooded spaces made of untreated silver fir wood. It was built in the style of the traditional stables to be found in the canton. This means the building fits in harmoniously with the natural surroundings and guests are given fantastic views, for example over the impressive rockface of the "Tschingelflue" with a height of 250 metres.

In the airy entrance, a 10-metre glass foyer offers an amazing view of the Alpine landscape. An outsize sculpture of Wilhelm Tell, carved entirely from wood, dominates the room and naturally focuses on the Tell legend. Audio stations give guests the possibility to listen to excerpts of the Tell story in various languages, even in Mandarin.

Unique comfort with a promise of relaxation

The new building gives guests a view over the Reuss river and its surroundings, and thus creates an oasis of peace. The terrace provides direct access to the Reuss which means guests can enjoy a leisurely walk down to the river bank close by. This also means that the Gotthard Motorway Service Area can be reached directly by pedestrians and cyclists. A highlight for children is the 17-metre long mini version of the Gotthard road tunnel at the playground.

The catering concept at the Gotthard Motorway Service Area is based on natural, local products obtained from around 80 regional suppliers and producers. The spacious and light restaurant offers space for around 170 people. Coffee lovers will find that the coffee bar next to the self-service restaurant is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a leisurely coffee.

The concept for the sanitary facilities is exceptional and starts with the actual location: the spacious cutting-edge facilities with a rustic design are on the first floor and provide a breathtaking view of the Schächen Valley and the Reuss. The toilets in the form of a wooden hut are reminiscent of former times when there used to be "privies".

Electric charging station

The new Gotthard Motorway Service Area also features a state-of-the-art electric charging station, a pioneering project for the whole country which will start operating in June 2018. With partner Ionity, a joint venture of several major automobile manufacturers, there will be six ultra-fast charging stations installed on each side of the service area at which the electric vehicles can be charged in just 20 minutes. In collaboration with the second partner, the energy provider Groupe E based in French-speaking Switzerland, four MOVE charging stations are being created per side which make it possible to charge all electric vehicles with standard connector types. The energy for charging the electric vehicles comes from renewable sources.
