Radical Figuration: New Acquisition for the Collection of Kunstmuseum St.Gallen

The Kunstmuseum St.Gallen is pleased to announce the acquisition of La propag andiste idiote (1965) by Jacqueline de Jong. The work was acquired through Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London, during the staging of the exhibition Jacqueline de Jong. Disobedience, currently on view at the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen through March 22, 2026.

La propag andiste idiote (1965) marks a pivotal moment in Jacqueline de Jong’s early artistic development, in which her expressionistic, figurative visual language—charged with scenes of violence, sexuality, and political unrest—fully emerges. Executed in oil on canvas (115 × 72 cm), the work belongs to the Accidental series and depicts a chaotic demonstration in which distorted, creature-like figures wield batons and knives; their bodies are fragmented across a turbulent pictorial field.

Much like the socially critical paintings of George Grosz and Otto Dix from the 1920s, De Jong’s composition exposes the grotesque undercurrents of power, ideology, and mass manipulation. Here, however, propagandism is embodied in a female figure, complicating traditional gendered representations of authority and victimhood. De Jong’s deep dichromatic palette—at once seductive and abrasive—imbues the scene with a twisted, disquieting beauty.

With this acquisition, Kunstmuseum St.Gallen reaffirms its commitment to post-war radical figuration, as well as to an artist whose uncompromising vision addresses the entanglements of politics, violence, and desire with striking clarity.
