6-month report

06.09.2011

In the first semester of 2011, the Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG achieved a revenue
of CHF 15.1 million, an increase of 12.6 per cent compared to the previous year.
Both the Bernese Oberland Railway and the Schynige Platte Railway, which also
belongs to the company, carried more passengers than in the first six months of
the previous year. Growth was recorded specifically in the Asian group-travel
business. Expenditure increased by 9.8 per cent in the first semester of 2011 in
comparison to last year. The Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG spent more on maintenance
work. The company received CHF 6.1 million in compensation for services in the
public transport sector, although this was cut by 4.6 per cent in comparison to
the previous year. The result was a half-year deficit of CHF 0.9 million. The
company thus performed better than in the first semester of 2010, when the
deficit was 17.3 per cent higher. Barring severe incidents, the Berner
Oberland-Bahnen AG expects to present a balanced result at the end of 2011.
An attractive mountain hotel was able to be opened on Schynige Platte on 28 May
2011, after a period of construction and renovation work. The company has
invested CHF 7.8 million in the renovations and an extension. The result is a
building with a spacious vantage terrace and a modern interior. Initial
experience shows that the new mountain hotel has been well received by guests
and is contributing towards establishing Schynige Platte as a popular excursion
destination.
