Andreas John will succeed Rudolf Baumann as Head of the «System
Management» division with effect from 8 March 2010. Mr Baumann will
continue his work in national and international committees while also
ensuring the transfer of know-how with his expertise in system
management. Wolfgang Hechler took over the helm of the newly created
«Asset Management & Service» division on 1 March 2010.
Andreas John, 39, has been working for Swissgrid as project
manager of TSO Switzerland since February 2007. In July 2008 he took
over as Head of Grid Operations of the Swiss Transmission System.
Prior to joining Swissgrid, the power engineering graduate from the
University of Dortmund worked for Centralschweizerischen Kraftwerke,
Enermet, ABB and Siemens.
Wolfgang Hechler, 42, will assume responsibility for building up
the new «Asset Management & Service» division. With a degree in
electrical engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, he
has a long track record and a wealth of experience in the field of
electricity grid management. He joins Swissgrid from Vattenfall
Europe Distribution Hamburg GmbH, where he latterly served as Head of
Grid Strategy.
The creation of the new «Asset Management & Service» division
represents a milestone in Swissgrid's development. The new division
is responsible for maintenance, renewal and expansion of the
transmission system. Ongoing maintenance and expansion of the grid
infrastructure are essential if Switzerland's growing electricity
consumption of between one and two per cent a year is to be satisfied
and new power plants are to be connected to the grid.
As the national grid operator, Swissgrid is responsible for the
secure, reliable and cost-effective operation of the Swiss high-
voltage grid. With a length of 6,700 kilometers, the grid connects
power plants to the supply regions within Switzerland. It also acts
as an «electricity superhighway», transporting energy to and from
Europe, as well as a platform for electricity trading in the Europe-
wide liberalised electricity market.
moving power - Swissgrid is the national grid company, and in its
capacity as transmission system operator it ensures the secure,
reliable and cost-effective operation of the Swiss high-voltage grid.
Swissgrid employs around 250 skilled people from twelve countries at
its sites in Laufenburg and Frick. As a member of the European
Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) it
is also responsible for grid coordination and grid usage in terms of
the European exchange of electricity. Swissgrid is wholly owned by
the eight Swiss electricity companies Alpiq AG, Alpiq Suisse SA, Axpo
AG, BKW FMB Energie AG, CKW AG, EGL AG, Stadt Zürich ewz and Rätia
Energie AG.
