technology/New Order
Technology and systems from init innovation
in traffic systems AG are more in demand than ever throughout the
world. Further impressive proof of this comes in the form of an order
for init from Rotterdam. In the city with the largest seaport in
Europe, the telematics specialist based in Karlsruhe has been
commissioned to integrate some 400 vehicles (129 trams, 226 buses and
41 service vehicles) of the city-owned transportation company RET
(Rotterdamse Electrische Tram) into an init operations control system
(Intermodal Transport Control System - ITCS). The project has a
volume of several millions of euros and is already the third contract
for init from the Netherlands, after the public transportation
services in The Hague and the private transportation company Syntus.
"We are delighted to have won this important contract. It is at the
same time an important reference for the entire Benelux region. This
contract will help us continue to extend our already excellent market
position in the Netherlands," said init CSO, Dr. Jürgen Greschner,
upon signing the contract. As their ambitious goal, RET and init aim
to have the vehicles of RET provided with init technology by the end
of 2009.
Key reference project for the Benelux region
All vehicles will be equipped with the init on-board computer
COPILOTpc, which is based on the standard operating system Windows®
XP embedded. Further technology includes an ID card reader, which
allows the driver to use a chip card to register in the vehicle. The
interface to the central ITCS, which will also be supplied by init,
will be implemented using a GPRS-based radio data transmission
system.
With a population of some 1,100,000, the city region of Rotterdam is
the second largest city region in the Netherlands and the trading and
industrial center of the country. 600,000 passengers use the local
public transportation services of RET every day. Extrapolated to the
year, RET serves some 185 million passengers. The RET network
combines public services that include 38 bus lines and eight tram
lines, which primarily operate in the city center.
