init innovation in traffic systems AG has been commissioned by four regional transportation companies of the DB Stadtverkehr GmbH to set up an extensive control system for bus services in Bavaria. As a result, some 3,000 vehicles from Franconia to East Bavaria and from Upper Bavaria to the Allgäu region will soon be controlled via a single standardized system. This is the largest individual order for init in Germany to date and increases init´s order volume to considerably more than 100 mio. euros.
The Regio-ITCS (Intermodal Transport Control System) thus created is the most extensive multi-location telematics system for local public transportation in Germany and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010. The system will integrate the rail networks of the Deutsche Bahn subsidiaries Omnibusverkehr Franken (OVF), Regionalbus Ostbayern (RBO), Regionalverkehr Oberbayern (RVO) and Regionalverkehr Allgäu (RVA), as well as several private bus operators.
The 3,000 currently integrated vehicles of the transport association will be equipped with on-board computers (with sales function), radio modules for GSM, GPRS and EDGE, as well as GPS receivers for vehicle tracking and location. In the future passengers will thus benefit from an improved service that provides more accurate information about the current traffic situation and departure times. It is further expected that the integration with the Bavaria-wide information system DEFAS once it is based on real-time passenger information and with DB AG´s Reisenden Informations System RIS will ensure a more effective dovetailing of bus and rail services.
In addition to the vehicles, init will also furnish the control centres of the regional transportation companies with hardware and software. The multi-client capability of the Regio-ITCS will support the integration of other bus companies in the future. The recently closed contract with DB Stadtverkehr includes options for further extension of the system.
