- Jordan's GSM Operator Will Have the Largest Harris TRuepoint(TM)
Network in the Middle East and North Africa -
Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), a leading global supplier of
wireless equipment and services, has been selected by Umniah Mobile
Company in Jordan to supply and install Harris' network backbone and
cellular backhaul services. Umniah will use Harris' TRuepoint(TM)
next-generation microwave digital radio to provide the flexibility to
grow its customer network while supporting its 3G deployment.
The Umniah network will be the largest TRuepoint network in the
Middle East and North Africa. The operator was awarded its GSM
license by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in August of
2004 and plans to target Jordan's sizable youth sector. Umniah
predicts mobile penetration will grow from 20 percent to between 45
and 50 percent within seven years.
"We chose Harris because of the technical superiority of its
products and the flexibility it provides to accommodate our
aggressive launch schedule," said Michael Dagher, CEO of Umniah. "The
existing players are well established in 2G, and we are working with
Harris to deploy 3G voice and data services to meet increasing market
demand and create a significant technological edge for our services."
"We are very proud to provide Umniah with a state-of-the-art
network for a growing market," said Guy Campbell, president of Harris
Microwave Communications Division. "We will work closely with Umniah
during its critical launch period and throughout the operation to
provide the necessary field support."
Mr. Dagher, a veteran in the telecommunications industry, and his
Kuwaiti partners, the AlGhanim Group, are investing JD250 million in
Umniah Mobile Company, which is the newest mobile service operator in
Jordan. The company is expected to create hundreds of job
opportunities for the local market and boost investment in the
Jordanian telecommunications sector. Umniah also is expected to
develop the telecommunications sector through enhanced customer
services, improved rates, an innovative management style, development
of its human resources, and superior technology.
