European School of Oncology Announces Viktoria Kun and Ioanna Soufleri As Joint Winners of ACE Reporter Award 2005

Viktoria Kun, Health Correspondent on the Hungarian national daily newspaper Népszabadság, and Ioanna Soufleri, Science Editor on the Greek national daily newspaper To Vima, have been named today by The European School of Oncology (ESO) as joint winners of the ACE (Awarding Cancer Enlightenment) Reporter Award 2005. The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
This global initiative, launched in 2002, aims to encourage accurate and informative cancer journalism, and is focussed on consumer publications, which are key to enlightening the general public on cancer-related issues.
"The decision to nominate joint winners reflects the impressively high overall quality of the entries submitted," commented Dr. Alberto Costa, ESO's Director. "Both Viktoria Kun and Ioanna Soufleri have been responsible for a series of insightful articles in their respective newspapers, providing their readers with accurate and useful information on a range of cancer types."
Kun and Soufleri have been invited to attend the European Cancer Congress (ECCO) in Paris where they will each be presented with a cheque for 5,000 Euro at a special award ceremony that will be held as part of the FECS Presidential Symposium on Wednesday 2nd November 2005. The ACE Reporter Award and travel grant are funded by ESO's private donors. ECCO will also be the venue for the launch of the 2006 ACE Reporter Award.
A further four entrants were highly commended: Young Joo Song of the Korea Times has been awarded with a travel grant to attend ECCO 13 in Paris and will also be invited to the Award presentation ceremony; Clifton Leaf of Fortune Magazine (USA) who will be given a special mention of appreciation at the annual charity dinner of the American Italian Cancer Foundation in New York on 15 November 2005; Mónica Flores Lobato of QUO Mexico who will be congratulated at the opening ceremony of the ESO Annual course for Latin America in Lima on 24 November; and Cathy O'Leary of the West Australian who was presented the award in Sydney a few days ago.
The Award was open to journalists from around the world writing for newspapers, consumer magazines, newsletters or websites. Entries were judged on a series of criteria, which included dissemination of clear, accurate and useful information on cancer to the public; helping to improve the way cancer patients are treated; and making the science behind the stories understandable. ESO received 76 entries from 19 different countries.
