e-m-s new media AG - first profits for the period since stock market flotation (E)

e-m-s new media AG (WKN 521280/ ISIN DE0005212807), the home entertainment specialist, has reached the turnaround during the first quarter of the financial year 2003. For the first time since its stock market flotation in November 2000, the company achieved a positive surplus for the quarter.
The Groups turnover rose in the period from 01.01. to 31.03. 2003 by 69 percent in comparison to the same period of the previous year and totalled EUR 3,809,000 (turnover of the previous year: EUR 2,257,000). Of which 3.4 million Euro the DVD company e-m-s achieved in its core business field home entertainment.
The surplus for the period (profits after tax) arrived at EUR 634,000 after a negative result in the first quarter of the previous year of EUR -1,243,000. The EBITDA improved from EUR -104,000 to EUR 1,540,000.
The good result for the first quarter of 2003 underlines the success of the far-reaching restructuring measures which were virtually completed last year. The focal points of the new orientation were cost reduction and a revised distribution policy. Therefore, during the reporting period, marketing revolved almost exclusively around own titles only. This is reflected in a distinctly improved gross margin within the EBITDA-account which rose from 51.4 percent as of 31.03.2002 to 68.4 percent as of 31.03.2003.
The Management Board expects a Group turnover for the whole year of at least twelve million Euro. This will be achieved almost exclusively in the home entertainment field. This would mean an increase in sales proceeds for DVD/VHS by around 60 percent. For the financial year 2003, the Management is expecting a positive result for the period from the operative business as well. In addition, e-m-s new media AG will achieve other operative income as a result of the settlement with Baader Wertpapierhandelsbank AG totalling 2.6 million Euro.
