UK ISPs Optimistic For Next Year But Feel Let Down By Government / Broadband And E-mail Seen As The Biggest Revenue Generators

Campbell, USA (ots)

According to a survey of UK Internet Service
Providers (ISP), optimism regarding business prospects over the next
year remains high, despite the slow down in the world economy. Global
confidence within the ISP industry has also increased; with 70% of EU
based ISPs and more than 75% of US based ISPs either optimistic or
very optimistic about business prospects.
Two-thirds of UK service providers agreed that the government
wasn't doing enough to encourage growth of Internet access,
contrasting poorly with the 68% of US service providers who are
content with their government.
Asian ISPs also indicated high confidence levels in the next year,
although Middle Eastern and African ISP's showed less confidence
about their prospects. However 90% of respondents rate their business
prospects as fair or optimistic.
The results from the UK suggest that 90% of respondents thought
that smaller ISPs would be able to survive and compete against
multi-national 'super' ISP's. However, globally this figure fell to
64%.
Alun Davies, Rockliffe's VP Operations Europe, Middle East and
Africa commented: "With world markets as potentially volatile as they
are at the moment, it is good to see that confidence here in the UK
and in Europe as well as in the US remains high. "
Globally, the survey showed that 78% of service providers thought
the most important factor for business users choosing an ISP is
service level agreements (SLAs) and customer service, and 77% said
home users choose on cost. Broadband roll-out, e-commerce and e-mail
were seen as the three biggest drivers of Internet growth, and 71% of
those surveyed thought that broadband would be the biggest potential
revenue generator, second was e-mail at 60%.
