Bern (ots)

As of 1 February 2014, Antje Kanngiesser (39) will take over as Head of BKW's General Secretariat. In this capacity she will be responsible for all matters relating to legal issues, compliance, regulatory affairs and shareholdings. She succeeds Matthias Kaufmann, who will be focusing on important tasks related to the decommissioning of Mühleberg nuclear power plant and see other ongoing processes through to conclusion. This concerns in particular all regulatory and legal processes related to the decommissioning of Switzerland's first nuclear power plant.

Matthias Kaufmann was appointed legal advisor and Secretary to the BKW Board of Directors in 1992, and has been General Secretary and a member of the Extended Executive Board since 2000. During his successful time in this position, he was instrumental in achieving landmark decisions by the Federal Administrative Court and the Federal Court.

Antje Kanngiesser has a doctorate in law and since 2007 has held management positions at Alpiq and Energie Ouest Suisse in Lausanne, latterly as Head of Generation Development. After graduating she worked as a lawyer in Germany, Belgium and South Africa, specialising primarily in energy and infrastructure law. Antje Kanngiesser is a German-Swiss dual citizen, married with two children, and lives in Murten.

Commenting on the General Secretariat change, Suzanne Thoma, CEO of BKW, said, "I am delighted that Antje Kanngiesser, with her extensive knowledge and broad experience in all aspects of energy law, is joining us at BKW. She will drive forward BKW's development to a leading energy services provider in Switzerland. At the same time I would like to thank Matthias Kaufmann for his excellent work to date, and I am very happy that we have him in place for the difficult tasks related to the decommissioning of Mühleberg nuclear power plant. His lengthy experience will help us to see this unique process through without a hitch."
