BKW Italia S.p.A.
Further strengthening of commitment to hydro power segment

Bern (ots)

BKW AG is acquiring five small hydro power plants from A2A, Italy's second largest energy supplier with headquarters in Milan. Located at various sites in Brescia province (Lombardy), the facilities have a total capacity of just under 10 MW and produce some 40 GWh of power. This acquisition represents a further strengthening of BKW's hydro power commitment in Italy.

Since 2006 BKW has been operating its eight run-of-river power plants on Lago d'Iseo in Lombardy (total installed capacity: 42 MW). In 2011 BKW further boosted its hydro power commitment in Italy with the purchase of five small hydro power plants in the Aosta valley, with a total installed capacity of 8 MW. Its purchase of five more run-of-river plants in Brescia province will enable BKW to strengthen its commitment even further and leverage the synergies available through the joint operation of all the various plants. The purchase price is in the region of 40m. Euro.

BKW has been present in the Italian market for 13 years, combining its activities since 2006 under the holding company BKW Italia S.p.A. In addition to the hydro power plants mentioned above, BKW Italia S.p.A. also has a 25% interest in the gas-fired combined cycle power plant in Livorno Ferraris in the Piedmont region (BKW share: 200 MW) as well as a 48% stake in Ortona gas-fired power plant (BKW share: 50 MW). It is also planning a number of wind farms with a total installed capacity of 224 MW.
