360networks Deploys Global High Performance IP Network
Based on Cisco's latest Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology

Vancouver, (ots-PRNewswire) -

360networks today announced it is
deploying the highest performance MPLS-based global IP network, using
Cisco's latest MPLS (Multi-protocol Label Switching) technology.
MPLS is a technology that brings the engineering capabilities of
ATM to packet networks by tagging IP packets with "labels" that
specify a route and priority. By eliminating the need for routers to
perform an address lookup for every packet, MPLS speeds packets to
their destination with greater efficiency.
Edge routers assign a label to an IP packet as it enters the core
of the network. From there, MPLS-compliant devices along the way
simply look at the label information to switch the packet to its
destination. Less route processing results in networks with lower
latency and greater scalability. "Our advanced MPLS-based IP network
positions us as a clear leader in global, wholesale IP transport
services," said Stephen Baker, chief technology officer of
360networks. "It enables us to provide faster, lower cost and more
reliable services for all types of applications from frame relay and
ATM alternatives to IP virtual private networks, voice over IP and
streaming media."
"With the launch of this global network, 360networks will be able
to offer their customers a highly competitive level of service,"
Kevin Kennedy, senior vice president, Service Provider Line of
Business at Cisco Systems. "This next generation network will enable
them to deploy full end-to-end solutions on a worldwide scale."
Using an optical mesh network and Cisco's 12000 Series router
platform, 360networks is eliminating the need to deploy an ATM
(asynchronous transfer mode) network. This will allow the company to
avoid the capital costs other carriers face as they upgrade their
older networks, and reduce operating costs by eliminating the need to
manage multiple network layers. Baker added: "Using this network
architecture and technologies, we believe that we will have the
lowest cost global IP network." Using MPLS will also allow
360networks to offer IP services with carrier- grade Quality of
Service guarantees. Traditionally, these levels of QOS were only
available with other protocols that were less efficient due to their
higher network overhead.
The IP network will be IPv6 ready, making 360networks the first
global carrier to support this latest generation of Internet
protocol.
About 360networks
360networks (NASDAQ: TSIX and TSE: TSX) offers broadband network
and co- location services to telecommunications and data-centric
organizations. 360networks is developing one of the largest and most
technologically advanced fiber optic mesh networks in the world. By
mid-2002, the planned network will span 142,000 kilometers (88,000
miles) and link more than 100 major cities with terrestrial routes
and submarine cables joining North America, South America, Asia and
Europe. 360networks is also developing nearly 3.7 million square feet
of network co-location space. More information is available at
