Embargo 27.06 1100 - ICC Switzerland Chairman Thomas Wellauer elected as a member of the global ICC Executive Board

On 27 June 2014, the World Council of the International Chamber of Commerce - the world business organisation (ICC) elected Thomas Wellauer, Chairman of ICC Switzerland, as a new member of its global Executive Board. The election took place on the occasion of the World Business Organisation's annual meeting in Geneva. "I am proud to represent Switzerland on the ICC Executive Board", said Thomas Wellauer who is Chairman of ICC Switzerland and Group Chief Operating Officer at Swiss Re. "The International Chamber of Commerce - the world business organisation's key role as a premier dialogue partner with political leaders and international organisations will be highlighted over the coming years in emerging international frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals", he added. "Business around the world is a driver of innovation and an enabler of solutions for the challenges of our time. It holds the key to unlocking potential for creating jobs and growth. I very much look forward to opportunities to discuss with political stakeholders the role - and the contribution - of business to the sustainable growth agenda". Thomas Wellauer is Group Chief Operating Officer and a member of Swiss Re's Group Executive Committee. He started his career with McKinsey & Company. He then joined the Winterthur Insurance Group, which was later acquired by Credit Suisse. He continued his career at Clariant and Novartis. He holds a PhD in systems engineering from the ETH and an MBA from the University of Zurich. The ICC Executive Board is in charge of developing and implementing the strategy, the policies and the ICC programme of action. The Executive Board is chaired by Harold McGraw III, Chairman of McGraw Hill Financial. Its members serve for a three-year term.

ICC Switzerland was founded in 1922 by economiesuisse (formerly Vorort), the Swiss Bankers Association, and the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in France as one of the first ICC chapters. On behalf of Swiss companies, ICC Switzerland provides access to the activities of the World Business Organisation, informs about global economic developments, influences these from a Swiss point of view, and promotes positions taken by the international business community towards Swiss politics policies held within the international business community in Swiss politics. www.icc-switzerland.ch
