The course has now been set for the appointment of a successor to

Generali Holding Vienna AG, Vienna. Karl Stoss (aged 47) was
presented to the Supervisory Board of this listed company as
designated Chairman of the Managing Board during the Supervisory
Board's meeting yesterday. Stoss, currently a member of the Managing
Board of Raiffeisen Zentralbank Oesterreich AG (RZB), will be
recommended to the Supervisory Board for election into the Managing
Board, which he would join on 1 October 2004. He would then take over
chairmanship of the Managing Board from Dietrich Karner at the
beginning of 2005.
Karner: "A forward-looking decision that sends out a clear signal"
Karner sees Karl Stoss' appointment as a clear signal on the part of
the group's parent in Trieste that the Generali Vienna Group is to
travel a path of steady further development. "I am delighted that we
have been able to find an excellently qualified top-of-the-line
Austrian executive to succeed me." He will also be bringing his
expertise from the banking industry to bear for the benefit of the
companies group, which is one of the three leaders in the Austrian
insurance market and is also playing a leading role in Central and
Eastern Europe. His appointment reflects the group's strategic
orientation as Austria's only fully integrated financial services
provider.
To quote Karner, "I see the planned appointment as a very
forward-looking decision. Mr Stoss will be taking over as head of a
group of companies with an excellently functioning management, highly
motivated employees, streamlined organizational structures, healthy
foundations and profitable lines of business in a total of eight
countries. I am fully confident that the points have been set in
precisely the right direction."
Karl Stoss was born in the Province of Vorarlberg. He has been a
member of the Managing Board of RZB since 1 December 2001. Before
that, he was second in command at Oesterreichische Postsparkasse AG
for four years, having already acted as consultant to that company.
He was Partner and Division Manager at the MZSG Management Centre in
St. Gallen from 1986 to 1996. He worked for insurer Vorarlberger
Landesversicherung from 1984 to 1986.
Karl Stoss read business administration at Innsbruck University,
where he also worked as a contractual assistant professor for two
years and as a lecturer from 1987 to 1998. His résumé is rounded off
by his international activities as a lecturer and writer.
Karl Stoss is married with three children. This lover of the arts and
culture also includes mountaineering and skiing among his favourite
hobbies.
Dietrich Karner celebrated his 65th birthday at the end of January.
He has led Generali Holding Vienna AG since 1986. A trained jurist
born in Rome, he has worked for the Generali Group since 1963.
Karner is among other things President of the Austrian Association of
Insurance Companies, a member of supervisory boards both within and
outside the group, and President of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde
in Wien and the Generali Foundation.
