Riverhead-Protected Gambling Sites Easily Deflect Super Bowl Weekend DDoS Attacks

CUPERTINO, CA (ots)

Riverhead Networks™, a leading provider
of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) solutions, today announced
that its gaming customers were unaffected by the rash of attacks
aimed at online gambling sites during the busiest time of the year:
Super Bowl weekend.
While a number of sites were reportedly taken offline, Riverhead-
protected customers reported they easily deflected any attacks aimed
their way, enabling them to provide uninterrupted service throughout
the weekend. Many of the attacks were launched by extortionists
committing "cyber shakedowns," threatening to keep attacking until
protection payments were made.
"The Super Bowl is the most important event of the year for us,"
says a network engineer at a Riverhead-protected gaming site. "That's
what makes this weekend so attractive for the extortionists -- they
know no one can afford any downtime. Fortunately, we had invested in
the Riverhead solution several months ago as part of a comprehensive
DDoS defense strategy to protect against a similar situation, and it
really paid off. The attacks started on Friday and continued through
the weekend, peaking at 200 megabits per second. But our site stayed
up."
"As the weekend's events show, DDoS attacks are becoming a
significant and growing threat to online enterprises, government
agencies, and providers of all sizes," says Steve Woo, vice president
of marketing and business development at Riverhead. "Not only were
gaming sites a popular target, but Super Bowl weekend also saw a
massive DDoS attack against SCO, launched by hundreds of thousands of
'zombie' hosts infected with the MyDoom worm -- exactly the type of
severe attack that only Riverhead's new high-performance XT Series of
appliances was designed to defend against. Clearly, any business with
an online presence needs to be prepared, and Riverhead delivers the
protection those businesses need."
