The Banca del Gottardo and Its Commitment to Social Development

Lugano (ots)

The Banca del Gottardo is pleased to sponsor the
photography exhibition "Gotthard, via subalpina" by Maurice
Schobinger showing at the Swiss Camera Museum in Vevey from 1
February to 20 April 2003.
The Banca del Gottardo has chosen to sponsor Maurice Schobinger's
exhibition, "Gotthard, via subalpina" for the following reasons:
For centuries, the San Gottardo has been both a point of
convergence and a point of divergence: a physical and meteorological
barrier between North and South, but also a place where different
cultures and languages meet.
Human attempts to overcome this physical barrier have gone hand in
hand with technical progress, advancing beyond the first hardy stone
bridges to today's motorway tunnel.
We are now in the midst of a further step: the Alptransit project,
which, with the carving out of a basic train tunnel, is designed to
spare the mountain range the consequences of increased road traffic.
The San Gottardo embodies the contrast between nature and human
attempts to tame it to suit our needs.
At the foot of this imposing range, strategic as only few in
Europe are, is the headquarters of our institution, which identifies
with the mountain in so far as the mountain represents the corporate
values of solidity, security, and dynamism.
In addition, the Banca del Gottardo has always been involved in
the visual and photographic arts, an area in which our institution
has for some time owned the most significant collection of Swiss
contemporary art and one of the biggest collections of late
twentieth-century photography by Swiss artists. The Galleria Gottardo
(a Banca del Gottardo foundation) has dedicated a considerable part
of its activities to the art of photography. Its collection and
exhibition space are available to a wide-range of national and
international audiences.
It is with profound conviction that the Banca del Gottardo
supports cultural activities in Switzerland and abroad; such
activities reflect social development and provide the impetus
necessary to move ahead.
Banca del Gottardo, with head office in Lugano (Switzerland),
relies on a well expanded national and international network. Thanks
to its highly qualified teams of experts and its affiliates,
subsidiaries, branches and representative offices in Zurich, Geneva,
Lausanne, Bellinzona, Chiasso, Locarno, Bergamo, Milan, Athens,
Luxembourg, Monaco, Vienna, Prague, Hong Kong, Nassau (Bahamas), as
well as an important participation in Paris, the bank offers top
level financial services to its local and international clientele.
