BMW Group signs international declaration of "Cleaner Production" of the United Nations environmental programme

Munich (ots)

This week the BMW Group signed the international
declaration of the United Nations' environmental programme this week.
This treaty with the BMW Group again confirms the cutting edge
role of the sustainable treatment of resources in the sense of a
responsible and considerate dealing with and within the environment.
"To the BMW Group sustainability is a corporate principle. Being
the first car manufacturer in the world to certify all our production
plants according to ISO 14000 was the first step. Being the leader of
the Dow Jones Sustainability Index twice asserts us that we not only
are on the right way but have made good progress as well. As we
joined the environmental programme of the United Nations "Cleaner
Production" is just another logical step in the direction of
consequent sustainability", emphasises Dr. Norbert Reithofer, member
of the board of the BMW AG, who signed the treaty in company of
Jacqueline Aloisi de Larderel, Assistant Executive Director of the
United Nations environmental organisation UNEP.
Jacqueline Aloisi de Larderel as well sees a direct connection
between the Groups joining the globally valid "Cleaner Production
Programme" and the successful sustainability strategy of the company.
"For the finance and investor community the sustainability strategy
and the acceptance of the BMW Group to the Dow Jones Sustainability
Index plays an increasingly bigger role in evaluating the
enterprise."
The BMW Group was confirmed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index
as the world wide leading car manufacturer in view of sustainable
economy in 1999 and 2000.
The international declaration of the United Nations now signed by
BMW is a voluntary made agreement to make use of a specific,
preventive strategy, the so-called Cleaner Production. This trategy
from the very beginning propagates the avoidance of negative
influences in contrast to the so-called "End-of-Pipe" solution,
where environmental technologies come into operation at the end of
the production process only.
As the first European car manufacturer the BMW Group published a
sustainability report, the "Sustainable Value Report". The BMW Groups
"Sustainability Value Report" can be found on the Website
www.bmwgroup.com using the link "Engagement".
