32nd ISC-Symposium, May 23-25, 2002

For the 24th time the Max Schmidheiny
Foundation will award its Freedom Prize on Saturday, May 25, on the
occasion of the 32nd ISC-Symposium, taking place at the University of
St. Gallen, from May 23-25, 2002. Every year, the Max Schmidheiny
Foundation promotes outstanding scientific, political and
entrepreneurial initiatives and achievements that safeguard
individual freedom and responsibility. This year's prize will be
awarded to Prof. Drs. Ruud Lubbers, High Commissioner, United Nations
High Commissariat for Refugees, Geneva, for his contribution to the
maintenance and further development of a free social and economic
order. He will be speaking on "New Challenges Through Modern
Conflicts" in the framework of this year's general topic, "Pushing
Limits - Questioning Goals".
In this context several other renowned decision makers will
contribute to the open and constructive dialogue between generations
and cultures that the ISC promotes. Lord Robertson of Port Ellen,
Secretary General of NATO, will make use of the platform of the 
ISC-Symposium to deliver a strategic speech on "The Future of NATO's
Partnerships and Co-operations", while Prof. Dr. Joseph Deiss,
Federal Councillor & Head of the Federal Department for Foreign
Affairs, Berne, will address the issue of "The Feasible and Desirable
in Swiss Foreign Policy".
The extraordinary field of participants including the 250 winners
of the ISC Wings of Excellence Award, the world's largest student
competition, will discuss recent issues of corporate governance with
Christine Lagarde, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Baker &
McKenzie, Vernon Ellis, International Chairman, Accenture, as well as
André Leysen, Honorary Chairman, Agfa-Gevaert Group. A debate on the
goals and limits of scientific research will center on the statements
of Ernesto Bertarelli, Chief Executive Officer, Serono International
SA, and Augustinus O. Praem. Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck, Executive
Director, UNICORN Consultants GmbH. Further keynote sessions
featuring General the Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank, Director,
Rothschild Bank and Former UK Chief of Defence Staff, as well as
Boris Trajkovski, President of the Republic of Macedonia, will deal
with international co-operation in achieving sustainable peace and
setting limits to terrorism. Rainer Hertrich, Chief Executive
Officer, EADS, and Dr. Ulrich Lehner, Chief Executive Officer, Henkel
KGaA, will take a closer look at the goals and limits of
multinational corporations in the context of globalisation.
