European School of Oncology Presents 2005 ACE Reporter Awards

Paris, November 2 (ots/PRNewswire)

The European School of
Oncology (ESO) presented this year's joint winners of the ACE
(Awarding Cancer Enlightenment) Reporter Award 2005 -- Viktoria Kun,
Health Correspondent on the Hungarian national daily newspaper
Nepszabadsag, and Ioanna Soufleri, Science Editor on the Greek
national daily newspaper To Vima -- with euro 5,000 each at an award
ceremony held today at the European Cancer Conference (ECCO).
This global initiative, launched in 2002, aims to encourage
accurate and informative cancer journalism, and is focused on
consumer publications, which are key to enlightening the general
public on cancer-related issues. The winning entries were chosen from
a total of 76 submissions from 19 different countries.
"The decision to make a joint award reflects the impressively high
overall quality of the entries submitted," commented Dr Alberto
Costa, ESO's Director. "Both Viktoria Kun and Ioanna Soufleri have
been responsible for a series of insightful articles in their
respective newspapers, providing their readers with accurate and
useful information on a range of cancer types."
The Award was open to journalists from around the world writing
for newspapers, consumer magazines, newsletters or websites. Entries
were judged on a series of criteria, which included dissemination of
clear, accurate and useful information on cancer to the public;
helping to improve the way cancer patients are treated; and making
the science behind the stories understandable.
Young Joo Song of the Korea Times, whose entry was highly
commended, was awarded with a travel grant to attend ECCO, and also
attended the award ceremony. A further three entrants were highly
commended: Clifton Leaf of Fortune Magazine (USA) who will be given a
special mention of appreciation at the annual charity dinner of the
American Italian Cancer Foundation in New York on 15 November 2005;
Monica Flores Lobato of QUO Mexico who will be congratulated at the
opening ceremony of the ESO Annual course for Latin America in Lima
on 24 November; and Cathy O'Leary of the West Australian, who has
already been presented with her award in Sydney.
ESO thanks Eli Lilly and Company, a sustaining member of the
school's "Learning to Care" programme, for their exclusive
partnership on this important initiative to help promote the ACE
Reporter Award worldwide.
"In sharing ESO's goal of encouraging excellence in cancer
journalism," said Garry Nicholson, Platform Leader - Lilly Oncology,
"we would like to thank all the nominees for their tremendous
contribution to the success of the third ACE Reporter Award."
