Press Statement by the Office of Information Minister of Malaysia on the Aftermath of the Tsunami Disaster

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (ots/PRNewswire)

For humanitarian reasons
we are appealing to Malaysians to continue donating toward the
victims of the natural tsunami disaster especially to those in
Sumatra since the devastation of the disaster is too huge and heart
rendering.
We, in Malaysia, are very lucky since the government had prepared
a competent mechanism in delivering immediate aid to solve problems
faced by the victims.
The Malaysian Government also has plans to aid the local victims
in the long term, especially in the reinstatement of their livelihood
and to rebuild their destroyed homes.
Therefore, it is best that we do not forget our closest neighbour,
Sumatra, Indonesia, especially Aceh and other parts of the island
which are now riddled with tremendous and immediate problems such as
the lack of nutrition, water, medical supplies and the logistic
problems in shifting victims from completely destroyed areas to be
sheltered in safe places.
In this context, I would like to congratulate and thank the media
and certain organisations in Malaysia that have taken the initiative
to organize humanitarian aid funds towards Tsunami victims, such as:
    1. Aceh Humanitarian Fund by Utusan Malaysia.
    2. Asia Tsunami Humanitarian Fund by Berita Harian, Harian Metro, TV3,
8TV and the Malaysian Foreign Ministry.
    3. Malaysia Tsunami Victims' Fund by New Straits Times, Berita Harian,
       TV3 and 8TV.
    4. The Star Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund co-organised by The Star and
       Mercy Malaysia.
    5. The Sun Tsunami Emergency Supplies Fund by The Sun.
    6. BAKTI which has launched a donation drive to collect cash and
necessities for the victims, especially for Aceh and Sri Lanka.
    7. The Malaysian Red Crescent Society which has also sent help in the
form of food, clothing and medical supplies to victims.
I hope the donations and aid collected through the funds could be
fully used by the victims and be taken as a sign of love and
compassion from Malaysians to the affected countries such as
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives where they are
constantly praying for the well being of the victims.
