Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced today the
availability of its new UHF RFID IDIC(R) ATA5590, named TAGIDU, that
serves a very broad spectrum of long-range RF Identification
applications. TAGIDU can be used in a frequency range of 800 MHz to 1
GHz and is suited for worldwide use. Its flexibility and the
outstandingly low power consumption enable to achieve a unique
read/write performance with extended distances up to 10 meters. The
ATA5590 is a result of the research and development of the
European-funded project Palomar, and also of Atmel's long-term
research in the area of RFID. TAGIDU uses Atmel's unique and flexible
UHF platform concept, named AIDU.
The need for RFID is growing substantially due to its increased
performance and enhanced functionality. Compared with bar codes, RFID
provides extended read/write distances, line-of-sight is not
necessary, and data can be changed whenever needed. Long-range UHF
provides logistic advantages especially for supply-chain
applications, resulting in larger volumes of goods to be identified.
The TAGIDU IC ATA5590 is designed for intelligent passive tags and
labels. Its features make the device well-suited to match the needs
of supply-chain management and logistic applications. TAGIDU
addresses the GTAG(TM) requirements and is able to carry EPC data
structures. The innovative link mechanism, along with the device's
extremely low power consumption (typically 10 micron W), enable
maximum operation distances in several application environments.
Read/write distances of up to 10 m with 4 W EIRP can be achieved. The
device also features simultaneous operation of multiple tags in the
field of one reader antenna (anti-collision function, up to 460 tags
per second), and 1024 bits of user memory plus 320 bits of system
memory.
The device's forward link enables the user to choose either of two
modulation schemes: state-of-the-art ASK or the new DSBM (Double
SideBand Modulation, a quasi modified PSK coding) modulation, thus
selecting the best combination of operation range, bit rate and
secure link mechanism.

which specific requirements, our new TAGIDU device fits in almost any
application environment without complex adaptation. The ATA5590 is
not pre-configured before use, all settings depend on the reader's
protocol. Such a flexible and easy-to-use UHF solution has not been
available on the market up to now. We are also excited to announce
that further AIDU-compatible products are in preparation," said
Michael Fislage, Atmel's RFID Marketing Manager.
Atmel, a pioneer in the RFID area and member of EPCglobal,
provided the industry's first read-only RFID ICs in the late 1980's.
Since 1995, Atmel has also been offering the world's most flexible
read/write RFID ICs. Today, Atmel is a key player for
low-frequency-based 125 kHz RFID ICs for access control systems. The
portfolio also includes ICs addressing the 13.56 MHz, UHF and
Microwave frequency range.
Samples of the new TAGIDU RF IDIC ATA5590 as die-on-wafer or in
TSSOP10 packages (for engineering purposes only) are available now.
