UK's Busiest Library Consortium Opts for Geac's Vubis Smart

Markham, Ontario and Bristol, England (ots/PRNewswire)

- BT selects Geac Vubis Smart to manage all branch libraries for
Essex County in joint system with Southend and Thurrock Councils
MARKHAM, Ontario and BRISTOL, England, October 14 /PRNewswire/ --
Geac(R) (TSX:GAC, NASDAQ:GEAC) has won a major contract with BT to
provide its Vubis Smart library automation system to manage all
libraries for Essex County and Southend and Thurrock Councils (Essex
Libraries Consortium) in the United Kingdom. The contract was won in
a full tender, which included evaluating responses from all the
major public library systems suppliers represented in the UK. One of
the country's largest library services and a long-standing Geac
customer, Essex Libraries Consortium becomes the second UK Public
Authority customer for Vubis Smart, Geac's innovative, Web-based
Library Management System, which has more than 100 installations in
Europe since its launch two years ago.
BT Consulting & Systems Integration selected Geac and its Vubis
Smart system following a joint supplier evaluation. It was felt that
Geac is best placed, as a leading supplier of library automation
systems, to deliver a new system that will meet all of Essex
Libraries Consortium's current and future requirements.
Serving almost 1.2 million members through over 90 services
points, Essex, Southend and Thurrock Libraries will be able to offer
a wide range of new services using Vubis Smart. Vubis Smart supports
e-government commitments through e-books, e-payments, and on-line
registration. New user services will include both manual and
automated SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information).
Additionally, Vubis Smart's sophisticated database manager supports
powerful collection management features including local information,
the Schools Library Service, and Departmental Collections. Vubis
Smart also supports Essex's existing RFID facilities.
"Geac's Vubis Smart is the most innovative and flexible system for
managing data in a variety of formats," said Councillor Bonnie Hart,
Cabinet Member for Libraries at Essex County Council. "We are
confident that Vubis Smart will enable us to provide excellent
access and service to our customers."
"We are pleased that, after a long and detailed review of the
Libraries Automation market, BT Consulting & Systems Integration
selected the new generation system from Geac and that as a result we
are able to continue a long-standing relationship with Essex,
Southend and Thurrock," Steve Barker , UK General Manager of Geac
Library Solutions, said. "Our agreement with BT Consulting & Systems
Integration reflects Geac's focus and dedication to this important
market in the UK and we are confident that Vubis Smart will enable
the Essex Libraries Consortium to provide new levels of service to
its customers."
Geac Vubis Smart is an easy-to-use information management system
for libraries, archives, museums and business intelligence centers.
The Vubis Smart information system consists of advanced Web-based
functionality for searching information and objects. Vubis Smart
transparently incorporates the latest standards in technology and
information, emphasizing ease of use with simplified workflows and
comprehensive reporting. Based on the latest Internet technology,
