Company Information/frequency
06.01.2009
2008 has been a successful year for the Jungfraubahn Holding AG in
terms of guest frequency. Last year, 628,000 visitors travelled to
the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe. This is the second best result ever
and it is 8% above the five-year average. Among the experience
mountains, the Mürren Rail & Cableway and the Harder Railway achieved
record frequencies. Guest admissions recorded by JUNGFRAU Winter in
2008 were the best ever and 8,9% above the five-year average.
Arrivals on the Jungfraujoch, the Jungfrau Railway´s most important
excursion offer, were well above the five-year average but were 10.6%
below last year´s historic record figure. There are two main reasons
for this fall compared to last year: the 2007 promotion by the Bern
Building Insurance Company (GVB) with its attractively priced fare
and the Korean market, which has been particularly hard hit by the
financial crisis. However, there are already positive indications
that it has been possible to increase the average yield per Joch
visitor considerably in 2008.
In terms of frequency, the experience mountains, First (First Aerial
Cableway) and Kleine Scheidegg (Wengernalp Railway), reported good
results. Positive results were also recorded by the
Lauterbrunnen-Mürren Rail & Cableway BLM and the Harder Railway in
its centenary year.

In its centenary and record year, the Harder Railway recorded almost
double the number of guests in comparison to 2007. This can be partly
explained by the fact that in August/September 2007, a landslide
forced the railway to suspend operations for six weeks. However, a
comparison of 2008 with the five-year average still shows a 72.5%
increase.
Winter sport
At the end of November, the JUNGFRAU Winter Region started the
2008/2009 winter season with plenty of snow and good weather. The
second phase of the Kleine Scheidegg technical snow facilities were
able to be put into operation in good time. In addition, five
kilometres of piste alongside the Wixi and Fallboden chairlifts and
two kilometres of piste on the valley run to Brandegg now have
snow-making machines, meaning that 50% of the piste-area in the
region can now be provided with technical snow. Jungfrau Railways now
offers snow-sport guests an even greater guarantee of snow.
In November and December 2008, the ski region as a whole recorded 4%
fewer guests in comparison to the previous year. In 2008, a total of
1.2 million snowsport fans visited the JUNGFRAU Winter Region. Over
the Christmas/New Year period (22.12.2008-4.1.2009) 217,700 guests
(7% more in comparison to 2007) enjoyed the Grindelwald-First, Kleine
Scheidegg-Männlichen and Mürren-Schilthorn pistes. Here an excellent
mix of Jungfrau Region visitors and a healthy proportion of 1-day
guests played a role, but the leading role was played by our loyal
regular guests from local markets as well as international
winter-sport guests.
