Lima Airport Achieves Steady Progress in First Year of Privatization; Fraport AG Holds 42.75-Percent Share in Lima Airport Partners

Lima Airport Partners S.R.L (LAP) - in which Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide holds a 42.75 percent share - is celebrating its first year of managing Lima Airport (airport code = LIM). Despite the short preparation period, the transition to LAP management on February 14, 2001, went smoothly. Since then, LAP has achieved steady progress in transforming Lima Airport's overall appearance and in improving operational procedures and cost structures. During the first six months, LAP invested some $4 million, particularly for enhancing passenger service and the terminal facilities.
Later this year, construction will begin on a new shopping complex at the passenger terminal, plus a hotel and parking garage. Called "Peru Plaza", the shopping center will feature extensive space for shops, restaurants and other services. The airport is being developed to provide international service standards and to serve as a major gateway for Peru as well as the surrounding region. A new terminal and a second runway are envisaged in future years. Lima's Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez - named in honor of the Peruvian aviation pioneer and national hero - served about 4.1 million passengers in 2001.
Tomorrow, LAP's first-year anniversary celebrations will be attended by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo - underscoring the airport's significance to the country. Other guests expected to participate include former President Belaunde, who first opened Lima Airport in 1964, and Transport Minister Luis Chang. Dr. Wilhelm Bender, Fraport AG's Chairman of the Executive Board, will also be taking part in the event.
Winning an international privatization tender, Lima Airport Partners received the concession to operate and develop Lima Airport for 30 years, with an option for a further 10 years. Along with Fraport, the consortium is comprised of two construction firms, Bechtel of the U.S. and Cosapi of Peru. Fraport appointed the LAP management team and is also responsible for key areas such as terminal management, commercial development and security at Lima Airport.
