Motorola Launches Next Generation TETRA Base Station

Frankfurt, Germany, November 30 (ots/PRNewswire)

- New TETRA Base Stations from Motorola Ready to Hit the Market
Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today launched its next generation
TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) base stations for the government,
public safety and industrial markets. With significant improvements
in size, weight and power consumption, the new products are designed
to reduce installation time and operating costs.
The new base station will be offered in two versions, a small
two-carrier station, MTS2, as well as a four-carrier station, MTS4,
that can be expanded to eight carriers. There will be options for
indoor and a variety of outdoor installation configurations. In
addition to currently supported UHF frequencies, the base station
will also cover frequency bands to address growing TETRA markets in
Russia, North Africa and China as well as Europe.
Power consumption is reduced by up to 33 per cent, leading to
lower running costs for radio network operators. Furthermore, reduced
size and weight of the base stations will reduce site rental,
installation and maintenance costs.
Further operational benefits are achieved through the introduction
of "drop & insert" E1 interfaces enabling cost efficient, flexible
and resilient connections to the switching centre. Additionally, the
use of two lines of connection between the base station and the
central switching equipment provides two clear benefits for operators
and users:
  • It allows more stations to be added to a network ring, reducing the length of connections between base stations which, in turn, reduces line rental costs.
  • The use of two lines provides a redundant connection in case one fails, ensuring always-on connectivity.
The new Motorola base stations also deliver "Best-in-Class"
receiver sensitivity performance, which together with increased
transmit power on the compact MTS2 base station will potentially
enable network operators to provide TETRA coverage with fewer sites
as well as giving users better quality of service
The product's TETRA 2 capability means the base station is built
for the future, and can be easily upgraded for high speed data
services as the software becomes available..
The base stations are expected to be used by organisations such as
public safety, government, transport, oil and gas, radio network
operators and the military to build new radio systems where mobile
communication coverage is needed. The new base stations are also
compatible with legacy Motorola TETRA systems and so can be used to
expand existing TETRA systems. In order to address the expanding
TETRA market and environmental demands the base stations can
withstand a wide temperature range from -30degreesC to +60degreesC.
Gary Aitkenhead, Director of Dimetra Infrastructure Marketing at
Motorola, comments: "Motorola is committed to investing in products
that support the needs of TETRA operators and users, providing our
customers with the most up-to-date, future-proof technology
available. As well as delivering significant functionality,
performance and cost of ownership benefits, TETRA 2 capability will
ensure that this base station will be around for a long time to come
and we are already building up customer orders."
The new Motorola base stations offer a high level of security,
including dynamic and static Air Interface encryption, which prevents
unauthorised monitoring of the communications, as well as intrusion
detection and site monitoring. In these cases, should someone break
into the base station's physical location, an alarm is sounded to
warn a network operator of the intrusion.
The new Motorola base stations are available to order now and will
be available for shipment to customers in Europe, Middle East and
Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America in 2006.
