Hellenic Police Utilize Motorola Fingerprint and Palmprint Technology to Help Bolster Public Safety

Schaumburg, Illinois (ots/PRNewswire)

- System Deployment Ahead of Schedule
Motorola, Inc.(NYSE: MOT) announced today that the Hellenic
Police, the national police force in Greece under the Ministry of
Public Order, has installed Motorola's Printrak Biometrics
Identification Solution (BIS) to help identify, process and manage
individuals who have committed a crime.
The Printrak BIS is a state-of-the art system that enables
automated fingerprint and palmprint matching for fast and accurate
suspect identification, which is designed to save the government
agency valuable time and resources. The Hellenic Police protect a
population of approximately 10.6 million people. The Printrak BIS was
installed in Athens, Greece with remote sites in the cities of
Patras, Piraeus, and Thessaloniki. The solution provides information
sharing between different agencies and will ensure higher data
integrity and consistency across the country in order to more easily
identify criminals.
"We have been a Motorola customer for 10 years. We trust its
technology and believe in its vision for biometrics. Migrating from
our older Motorola Series 2000 system to the new Motorola Printrak
BIS has provided us significantly more functionality and accuracy in
matching fingerprints and palmprints. The system is faster and we are
making hits that we did not make on the Series 2000, which is helping
us solve more crimes," said Assistant Director Yannis Yannakouris,
Chief of the Investigation Department of the Hellenic Police's
Forensic Division.
Motorola delivered the system one month ahead of schedule and
achieved system acceptance two months prior to the projected plan.
The new system provides updated matching algorithms, such as
Motorola's gray-scale matcher, which has already improved matching by
12 percent. The Motorola Printrak BIS also incorporates the latest
technology available in the industry, such the recently released
Oracle 10g database and XML.
"Motorola is pleased with the smooth implementation of the
Hellenic Police system. The Hellenic Police are solving crimes that
have been open for years, and it is rewarding to see customers
benefiting from Motorola's research and advancements in the field of
biometrics," stated Darrin J. Reilly, Motorola Communications and
Electronics, Inc, Vice President and General Manager, Biometrics
Business Unit.
Motorola is a leading provider of Mission Critical Communications
Solutions, including civil biometrics solutions and Automated
Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) to help public safety
agencies track and identify individuals. Motorola is one of the
world's leading biometric companies with solutions in more than 37
countries.
