Bern (ots)

In 2010 the Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM) of BKW FMB Energy
Ltd (BKW) recorded gross production of 3,109 million Kilowatt hours
(kWh), slightly exceeding the prior-year figure of 3,092 million kWh
to record its best result since going into operation. Since the
early 1970s the KKM has generated more than 102 billion kWh of
electricity, resulting in total savings of more than 42 million
tonnes of CO2 and 1.3 million tonnes in 2010 alone compared to the
output of a modern gas-fired combined-cycle power plant. The record
annual output is attributable to the plant's good condition and the
safety of its operations. Thanks to ongoing upgrading of plant
components, the KKM is well-equipped for long-term operation.
In 2010 the Mühleberg nuclear power plant fed electricity into the
grid for 8,172 hours (2009: 8,020 hours) or 93.3 percent of the year
(91.6 percent) with maximum reliability. With the exception of the
scheduled revision carried out in August/September and reduced
capacities in September and November due to the startup of new pump
drive systems, operation was uninterrupted. The average availability
of the plant since the end of 1972 amounts to 89.9 %, which is
exceptionally high by international standards.
BKW aims to continue ensuring the safe operation of the KKM
through continual plant upgrades and regular, thorough system checks.
The plant will continue to make an important contribution to energy
security in north-western Switzerland.
